Alameda County agreed to a $12 million settlement with the family of Sophia Mason, an 8-year-old found dead in 2022. An investigation found the county’s child welfare department received eight abuse reports about Sophia between 2014 and 2021 but failed to properly investigate at least one report of physical abuse in February 2021. Sophia’s mother was sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison for voluntary manslaughter and child abuse.
