n August 2023, Alison Davis called 911 from the couple’s New Haven, Indiana, home and said her husband, Kevin Davis, had fallen down the stairs. Kevin was found critically injured at the bottom of the staircase with significant bleeding and was taken to the hospital. Police initially treated what happened as an accident.
But medical evidence changed the direction of the investigation. CT scans revealed multiple skull fractures, and an emergency-room doctor raised concerns that Kevin’s injuries were inconsistent with a simple fall. An autopsy led investigators to classify his death as a homicide, and Alison was eventually arrested and charged with murdering her husband. She pleaded not guilty and spent about 17 months in jail awaiting trial.
At her 2025 trial, the prosecution and defense presented sharply different forensic explanations. A prosecution expert testified that Kevin suffered multiple blows to different parts of his head and argued that his death was a homicide. A defense expert testified that a single impact with the staircase banister could explain the multiple fractures and maintained that Kevin died from a fall. Investigators also acknowledged that no murder weapon had been found.
After a four-day trial, the jury found Alison Davis not guilty of murder. A juror later told CBS News that the prosecution’s case contained significant gaps and that the defense expert’s explanation of Kevin’s injuries made sense to the jury. Police Chief James Krueger, who investigated the case, has continued to say he believes Kevin was murdered, while Alison’s family and attorneys maintain that she was wrongly accused.
